Dr. R¨¹diger Behr

R¨¹diger Behr studied Biology at the University of Muenster, Germany. In 1998, he also received his PhD from the University of Muenster working at the Institute of Reproductive Medicine on a project about the endocrine regulation of testicular function in non-human primates. As a postdoc at the University of Pennsylvania at Philadelphia, USA, he used mouse models to study the role of the Foxa transcription factors in testis, kidney and endoderm development. After that, he moved to the Institute of Anatomy, Developmental Biology, at the University of Essen, Germany. There he started working on Rhesus monkey embryonic stem cells and on the role of the transcription factor Kr¨¹ppel-like factor 4 in the mammalian testis. In 2005, he established the Stem Cell Research Unit at the German Primate Center in Goettingen, Germany, focussing on the common marmoset monkey (Callithrix jacchus) as a NHP model for preclinical and basic stem cell research. ¡¡ More>>

Dr. Sheng Ding

The main research focus of the Ding laboratory is to develop and integrate chemical and functional genomic tools to study stem cell biology and regeneration. Over the past few years, they have constructed large combinatorial chemical libraries (>100,000 small molecules) and arrayed cDNA (>30,000 human and mouse genes) and RNAi (targeting over 16,000 human and mouse genes with more than three designed sequences per gene) libraries. Furthermore they have developed and implemented high throughput cellular screens of these libraries to identify small molecules and genes which can control stem cell fate in various systems (including pluripotent embryonic stem cells, multipotent adult neural stem cells and mesenchymal stem cells, and lineage-restricted somatic cells), as well as modulate specific signaling pathways. Moreover, biochemical and cellular studies, including genome-wide expression analysis using Affymetrix microarrays, affinity chromatography for target identification, and cDNA and/or RNAi complementation screens to map signaling pathway, are being used to characterize the molecular mechanism of these identified small molecules and genes. Those studies may ultimately facilitate the therapeutic application of stem cells and the development of small molecule drugs to stimulate tissue and organ regeneration in vivo.¡¡¡¡More>>

He has designed patented biocontainment enclosures for primates involved in infectious disease research.

Dr. Barbara C. Hansen

Dr. Hansen is the Director of the Center for Preclinical Research, which combines the Obesity, Diabetes and Aging Research Center and the Diabetes Complications Prevention Center of the College of Medicine and Professor of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of South Florida Tampa. Her research has addressed the physiological, cellular, and molecular defects underlying the development of obesity and diabetes mellitus and their prevention, as well as the long-term prevention of diabetic complications.? Dr. Hansen has developed non human primate models of obesity, the metabolic syndrome, diabetes and diabetic complications, and these models are applied to studies of the underlying mechanisms of these disorders, their natural history, and their mitigation/treatment and prevention by pharmaceutical and non pharmaceutical approaches.? Dr. Hansen has been a leader in studies of obesity in non human primates, and has established a large colony of spontaneously obese rhesus monkeys that are used to study the efficacy of new agents, and to establish their potential for translation to patients.

Design, implementation, interpretation, and reporting of GLP toxicology and pharmacokinetic studies necessary to support IND and NDA application. These studies covered all areas of toxicology testing including general (acute to chronic), genetic, reproductive/fertility, and toxicokinetic assessment. Serve as study monitor and contact to outside contract laboratories. Writing of integrated summaries to describe drug safety profile for IND submission, and other correspondence with FDA.
Dr. Tae-Won Kim joined Isis in 2001 where he served as Group Leader for Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at SUGEN, Inc. from 1997 - 2001. From 1996 - 1997 he was post-doctoral fellow at University of California, San Francisco. His postgraduate training included research in the areas of oral carcinogenesis. He received his PhD in the Department of Environmental and Molecular Toxicology from North Carolina State University at Raleigh.

The main interest of the Li Lab is to understand the molecular mechanisms of inherited neurodegeneration caused by a CAG repeat expansion in the disease genes. Currently, they focus on Huntington's disease (HD), an autosomal dominant genetic disease that is characterized by massive neuronal loss in selective brain regions and affects about 5/100,000 people in North America. Dr. Jeremy J. Mao

Dr. Shi was one of the major researchers in establishing the concept of activation-induced cell death (AICD), a term that is commonly cited in today¡¯s immunology field. He also found the critical role of c-myc in the regulation of T cell apoptosis. His early investigation provided the foundation of using rapamycin as an adjuvant for chemotherapy, which lead to clinical trials in various centers. The research team of Dr. Shi first showed that OPN is a critical molecule in stress-induced corticosteroid production and immunosuppression. Moreover, he proved that CD4+ T cells are responsible for asthma development. In recent studies, his research team investigated the mechanism of bone marrow derive mesenchymal stem cells in the regulation of immunosuppression. Now, he and his team are working on the following aspects: (1) molecular mechanisms of activation-induced cell death in T cell subpopulations; (2) understanding how immunosuppression is mediated mesenchymal stem cells; (3) tumor stroma and tumor immunology. ¡¡ More>>

Mark Walker graduated with a D.V.M from Texas A&M University in 1985. He completed a postdoctoral residency in Comparative Pathobiology and Primate Medicine/Surgery from Bowman Grey School of Medicine prior to joining Hazleton Laboratories in Vienna, Virginia, in 1990. During his 12 year tenure at Hazleton, which ultimately became Covance Laboratories, he developed a multi-species IV infusion program, expanded specialty toxicology, and functioned as a Principal Scientist and Study Director for the company. As a Scientific Manager, he mentored new Scientists and developed new training and development programs. After leaving Covance, Mark joined Sierra Biomedical in Reno, Nevada, a primate-only toxicology laboratory, to further enhance their expertise and capabilities as a premier NHP CRO. During this 9 year tenure, Mark contributed to the rapid growth and development of the Site and it's expanding areas of safety assessment expertise, to include IV infusion, the design, construction and implementation of a new state-of-the-art multispecies facility, and development of a host of Toxicologist training and development programs. His responsibilities also included the expansion and modernization of Laboratory Sciences, a multidisciplinary group of laboratories dedicated to the support of toxicological research. He has spent his more than 20-year career focusing on and developming training and development programs for toxicologists in the CRO industry, as evidenced by his active involvement in the American College of Toxicology and related forums for professional development. Mark has recently joined Frontier BioSciences, Inc. Qi Zhou received a PhD in Physiology & Embryology from Northeast Agriculture University, China, 1996 (Thesis: Nuclear transfer and serial nuclear transfer research in rabbit). In 1997-1999 he held a postdoctoral and Associate Professor positition in the Institute of Developmental Biology, Chinese Academay of Sciences (CAS), and in 1999-2002 he was a postdoc and Project leader within the group of Prof. J.P. Renard (Developmental Biology and Reproduction, INRA, Jouy-en-Josas, France). In 2001 he was offered a 100 talent position in the Institute of Zoology, CAS, where he is currently Professor of Developmental Biology, Vice Director of State Key Lab of Reproductive Biology. His research focuses on the mechanisms of differentiation and de-differentiation, particularly, cellular plasticity and totipotency of the stem cells, and the reprogramming mechanisms of the somatic cells.
